Cappadocia Heritage

Visiting: Cappadocia, Kaymaklı Underground City, Sahinefendi, Keslik Monastery, Mustafapaşa, Devrent Valley, Avanos, Goreme Open Air Musuem, Uchisar

Duration: 23 hours

Day 1 – Istanbul Port to Istanbul Airport to Cappadocia
You will get picked up from cruise ship and transfer to Istanbul airport to take the morning flight to Cappadocia

When you arrive and meet your guide at the airport just outside the arrival gate with a sign bearing group name and transfer to Cappadocia.

Tour to Kaymaklı Underground City, one of the most interesting underground settlements in Cappadocia. Even though the whole city has not been completely opened, and since only 4 floors have been uncovered, it is certain that Kaymakli is one of the largest underground settlements in the region. It is accepted as the widest underground city of Cappadocia, among the explored ones. The number of the storage rooms in such a small area supports the idea that a great number of people resided here. Archeologists think that this could have been up to 3500 people. SoÄŸanlı Valley, Open Air Museum in a wild natural setting near a typical Cappadocian village with its different style Rock-Cut churches and frescoes. You can have fun exploring the area on your own and getting off the beaten track. Villages in the valleys, surrounded by the “table top” mountains are very spectacular.

After lunch and we will visit Sahinefendi ( Sobesos ), newly discovered (01 May 2002) mosaic houses & Archaeological excavation site. Continue with Keslik Monastery near Cemil, that hides its frescoes behind a very thin smoke layer which we can only see by torch light. Our tour finishes with a visit to MustafapaÅŸa (Sinasos), an old Greek town with its spectacular old Greek houses; very fine examples of late Greek settlements and architecture. Finding Roman ruins of this sophistication provides evidence that there is still a lot we do not know about the history of Cappadocia. It is known that Christians were for the most part hiding from Roman soldiers, but there has never been any evidence of a full-scale Roman settlement here. Ongoing excavations are expected to disclose a great deal more of what must once have been a sizeable settlement. Overnight at Cappadocia

Day 2 – Cappadocia to Istanbul (or other destinations)
This is where you will enjoy the most popular and probably most fabulous way to view Cappadocia, the famous Hot Air ballooning with sunrise (extra)

Meeting at the hotel reception at 09:30am

After breakfast, first meeting with the lunar landscape of Cappadocia: rock formations beyond belief in Devrent valley; walking in Pasabag near Zelve; “fairy chimneys” where the voice of wind mixes with the “songs of fairies”. This site is also called Monks Valley. The name was derived from some cones carved in tuff stones which stand apart. After that we will have lunch in Avanos, centre of terra cotta work of art since 3000 BC. and a demonstration in a traditional pottery workshop. Afternoon, visit the famous Goreme Open Air Museum and see the best examples of Byzantine art in Cappadocia in rock-cut churches with frescoes and paintings (10th to 13th century). Then we will continue to Uchisar Rock-Castle to have a panoramic view of the valleys of Cappadocia. Many rooms hollowed out into the rock are connected to each other with stairs, tunnels and passages. Due to the erosion in places of this multi-leveled castle, it is unfortunately not possible to reach all the rooms. Then we will transfer you to the airport to take the evening flight to Istanbul and leave Cappadocia.

You will be arriving and meeting at the airport just outside the arrival gate with a sign bearing group name and  then getting transfered to Istanbul Port.
